Politics zabavnik ( Serbian : Политикин Забавник) is a popular weekly magazine in Serbia from Politika publishing house. The first edition came out on February 28, 1939. Initially, the magazine was published twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) in the form of a daily newspaper. Today the magazine, mostly called Zabavnik , appears once a week on Friday. A third of the magazine consists of comics, while the remainder is devoted to articles on technology, nature, history, music and important events. The popular slogan of the paper is For everyone from 7 to 107 (Za sve od 7 do 107). It was once called For Everyone from 7 to 77 , but was changed by the editor-in-chief after a reader asked in a letter whether he was still fit to read the magazine at 78.
history
Pre-war period (1939-1941)
The first editors of Zabavnik were journalists from Politika , led by Vladislav Ribnikar , Dušan Duda Timotijević and Živojin Bata Vukadinović . They were enthusiasts who united the Serbian left-wing intellectuals. They came up with the idea of creating an entertaining newspaper that included novels, short stories and comics. On December 31, 1938, the Politika organized a competition for the name of the new paper. Of the 34,998 submissions, a fifth chose the name “Politikin Zabavnik” (Politika's entertainment magazine). The first issue of the magazine came out on February 28, 1939. It was published in the Berlin format (31 × 47 cm) and had 12 pages printed in black and white. Four pages were also printed in red and its undertones. The concept of the zabavnik was a balanced relationship between comics and texts.
The comic editor Duda Timotijević was responsible for the translation of American comic strips and Sunday strips and was the godfather of most of the Disney characters, which he gave Serbian names. In addition to Disney comics, Zabavnik also published: Jungle Jim , Ming Foo , Little Annie Rooney , The Lone Ranger , Red Ryder , Thimble Theater , Curley Harper , Brick Bradford , and King of the Royal Mounted . Local comic authors also had a lot of space: Đorđe Lobačev (comics on Serbian folklore - Baš Čelik and Čardak ni na nebu ni na zemlji ), Moma Marković ( Rista sportista - the adventure of boys from Belgrade), Konstantin Kuznjecov (adaptations of Pushkin's novels in verse - The Story of the Golden Rooster and The Story of Tsar Saltan ), and Sergej Solovjev (adaptation of RL Stevenson's Treasure Island ). The biggest difference between the politician Zabavnik and competing comic books like Mika Miš and Mikijevo carstvo were the lines of text with crossword puzzles, novellas, news from science to sports and numerous short texts. In addition, the paper had all rights to use the Disney characters in Serbia.
The editor-in-chief of the texts was Bata Vukadinović. Politicians zabavnik published novels by Edgar Allan Poe , Mark Twain , HG Wells and many other well-known writers.
The average circulation was 41,000 copies per issue. After the bombing of Belgrade in World War II , the publication of the magazine was stopped. The last pre-war issue (No. 202) came out on April 4, 1941.
Post-war years (1952–1967)
After the war ended, comics were banned by the communist rulers. The reason given was that they were a product of capitalism. After the break with the Soviet Union in 1948, cultural cooperation with the Soviet Union weakened. This was first expressed in caricatures and animated films and later in printed comics in various newspaper editions.
Seven years after the end of World War II, Vladislav Ribnikar decided to reissue the Zabavnik. The first post-war edition appeared on January 5, 1952. Editor-in-chief was Kosta Stepanović, his first assistant Bogdan Popović, who later also became editor. Legend has it that the resumption was initiated by a visit by Athens representatives from the Walt Disney Company . This is said to have suggested to Tito to allow the publication of comics in Yugoslavia again. "Why not, I like Donald Duck, " was Tito's ascribed answer. Disney's characters always had a significant place in the issues of the politician Zabavnik .
Modern times (1968–1990)
The first day of 1968 was a historic date for the magazine. Nikola Lekić, then editor-in-chief , changed the design to a magazine format (25 × 33 cm). It was now also printed in color. Another significant difference was that the comics were now placed in the middle of the magazine. Before that there were only individual comic strips. Now complete episodes from 2-3 series have been released. From 1971 on, the politician Zabavnik was also published in Latin letters and in Slovene . During its peak, 330,000 issues were printed per issue. In the mid-1980s, the format was reduced again a little (21 × 30 cm).
