Polymnia Athanassiadi

Polymnia Athanassiadi , also Athanassiadi-Fowden ( Greek Πολύμνια Αθανασιάδη , born September 23, 1946 ) is a Greek ancient historian and religious historian and professor of ancient history at the University of Athens .

Life

Athanasiadi studied philology at the University of Athens and the Sorbonne and history at Somerville College at the University of Oxford . There she received her doctorate in 1976. She was a Fellow of the Center for Greek Studies at Harvard University (1979–1980), Woolley Traveling Fellow for the Middle East (1990–1991), Stanley Seeger Visiting Fellow at Princeton University (1995) and Alexander Onassis Public Benefit Foundation Senior Fellow at Harvard, Columbia , Duke and Berkeley Universities (2004).

She also taught as a visiting professor at Oxford (1990–1991), at Lomonosov University in Moscow (1999) and at the École pratique des hautes études , Section des Sciences religieuses in Paris (2002) and at the Collège de France (2006). She took part in the 72nd Eranos Conference with the general topic God or Gods? in July / August 2005 in Ascona , Switzerland , and is a member of the scientific advisory board of the École française d'Athènes .

Research areas

Athanassiadi is a specialist in the intellectual and religious history of the Mediterranean region in Hellenism and in the Roman Empire, as well as in the transition from Neoplatonic to Islamic theology .

Her regular trips to the Near and Middle East , from Turkey to Iran , have led, among other things, to a travel report about Anatolian Turkey and Northern Syria (Στο Σύνορο του Ευφράτη, Δόμος 1985, 2nd edition Απάμεια 1993). It also has a collection of 99 poems by the Turkish poet Ismail Emre (1900-1970) with translation and annotations (Πνοές, Δόμος 1991) and a bilingual edition of 51 poems by the medieval mystic Yunus Emre (Απάμεια 1996; for this she has the Abdi- İpekçi Prize received).

Athanassiadi publishes the series "΄Υστερη Αρχαιότητα" ("Late Antiquity") in the publishing house Κατάρτι and took on as coordinator of the Greek group in the international scientific program FIGURA.
