as-Saff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As-Saff ( Arabic الصف aṣ-Ṣaff  'The Row'; 'Rank and Link') is the 61st sura of the Koran , it contains 14 verses . It wasproclaimedin Medina , some verses presumably date after the defeat of the Muslims in the battle of Uhud (625) and the break with the Jews in Medina. The title refers to the fourth verse.

The sura mentions in one place (verse 5) Moses and in two places (verses 6 and 14) Jesus , the "son of Mary", both messengers of God who are not recognized by their people. It is unclear whether aḥmad in verse 6 is to be understood as a name, Ahmad , or as an adjective, "highly commendable". Muslim commentators recognize the Prophet Muhammad in this name . Verse 9 speaks of him: "It is he who has sent his messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to give it the upper hand over all religion, even if the polytheists dislike it."
