az-Zalzala

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Az-Zalzala ( Arabic الزلزلة, DMG az-Zalzala  'The Quake') is the 99th sura of the Koran , it contains 8 verses . Its title refers to the first verse. Although the content of the sura would fit into the first Meccan period of the Koranic tradition (610–615), the majority of Muslim commentators consider it Medinic . Together with sura 81 and sura 82 it belongs to the so-called apocalyptic suras.

The violent earthquake described in the first verse is a omen of the resurrection and the approaching Last Judgment . On Judgment Day, people are divided into groups, whereupon they can see their good and bad deeds, even the weight of a speck , during their earthly life.
