Ad-Duchan ( Arabic الدخان ad-Duḫān  'The Smoke') is the 44th sura of the Koran , it contains 59 verses . With the exception of verse 15, which wasproclaimedin Medina , the sura wasrevealedin Mecca . Verses 1–42 belong to the second Meccan period (615–620), the following final part belongs to the first period (610–615). The title refers to verse 10, in which smokedescends from heavenas a sign of the imminent resurrection of the dead and the end of the world .

After the introductory basmala , the sura begins with the letters Ḥā Mīm , which are also at the beginning of suras 40, 41, 42, 43, 45 and 46. This is followed by a reference to the night of the destiny in which the Koran was revealed, and to which a separate sura with the corresponding title al-Qadr is dedicated. After a general confrontation with the unbelievers , verses 17–33 describe the story of Moses as the leader of the Children of Israel when they exited Egypt , the land of Pharaoh , and the crossing of the split sea. Verses 43–59 again describe the agony of the unbelievers, mentioning the poisonous fruits of the zaqqum tree and the delights of the godly in paradise .
