al-Burūdsch

Al-Burūdsch ( Arabic البروج al-Burūdsch  'The Towers' or 'The Zodiac Signs') is the 85th sura of the Koran , it contains 22 verses . Their title refers to the first verse.

The first nine verses belong to the first Meccan period of the Koranic proclamation (610–615). They threaten the adversaries of the prophet in Mecca with death. Verse 3: "(By) the witness and that which is testified!" Has given rise to different interpretations, including:

  1. The witness is God, and what is witnessed is either the unity of God , the prophetic mission or “all things” (see verse 9 of this sura: “And God is a witness over all things”).
  2. The witness is Mohammed , and the witness is the message of the other prophets .
  3. The witness is every prophet who gives testimony about his people (including Jesus ).
  4. The witness is every person who testifies to the oneness of God.
  5. The witness are the members of man who bear witness to his work.

The following verses were probably added later and are assigned to the second Meccan period (615–620). The part from verse 17 onwards mentions Pharaoh and Thamud , thus recalling the fate of unbelieving peoples and closing with praise for the “glorious Koran on a well-kept table”.
