as-Saffat

As-Saffat ( Arabic الصافات, DMG aṣ-Ṣāffāt 'Those who stand in line'; 'Those in line') is the 37th sura of the Koran , it contains 182 verses . The proclamation of the sura belongs to the beginning of the second Meccan period (615–620).

The name of the sura is an indication of its clear structure. Similar to the beginning of many other suras, the first three verses consist of a series of oaths, which are followed by the praise of God as the creator of heaven and stars as “protection from every rebellious Satan ”. This is considered to be an expression of Muhammad's argument with the Meccan polytheists , who are threatened with the day of judgment . Verse 35 contains the beginning of the Islamic Creed : Lā ilāha illā ʾllāh (u) /لا إله إلا الله / 'There is no god but God'. After describing the delights of the gardens of paradise , the horrors of hell and the accursed zaqqūm tree with poisonous fruits, prophetic warners are mentioned from verse 73, each ending with the same refrain :

“And we kept his / her reputation among the later generations. Peace be upon Noah / Abraham / Moses and Aaron / Elias ! This is how we reward the righteous. He / you are among our faithful servants. "

In the section on Abraham, his dispute with the idolaters of his hometown is discussed, as well as the sacrifice of his son, who remains nameless here and is therefore identified with Ishmael by Muslim authors . After Lot and Jonah have been mentioned again, the discussion with the polytheists is resumed from verse 149. The sura closes with the break between Mohammed and the unbelieving Meccans and the repeated praise of God.
