Yunus (sura)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yunus ( Arabic يونس Yūnus  ' Yunus ') is the 10th sura of the Koran , it contains 109 verses . Almost all of the sura is dated to the third Meccan period (620–622). Its title refers to the biblical prophet Jonah mentioned in verse 98.

Muslim traditions agree that this sura was revealed in Mecca after Sura 17 and before the subsequent Sura Hud , with the exception of verses 40 and 94 to 96, which are addressed to the doubters and mischief-makers and therefore, according to some sources, into the Medinan Belong to time.

The first three letters Alif Lām Rā ' belong to the so-called mysterious letters with which some suras are introduced. The present sura deals with the topics that are repeatedly raised in Mecca and can be divided into three parts. The first part, with verses 1 to 70, emphasizes the divine origin of the mission of Muhammad and the Koranic revelation, the omnipotence and omniscience of God, the last judgment and divine retribution for human works. The second part, with verses 71 to 93, deals with the prophetic work of Noah and Moses , which is also discussed in Sura 7 , among other things . The third part, from verse 94 onwards, deals with various topics with no obvious connection.
