Al-Wāqiʿa ( Arabic الواقعة al-Wāqiʿa  'The arriving (hour)'; 'The breaking in (catastrophe)') is the 56th sura of the Koran , it contains 96 verses . The sura belongs to the first Meccan period (610–615), with the exception of verses 81–82, and according to some commentators also of verses 75–82, which are considered to be Medinic . The title refers to the first verse in which the hour of resurrection and divine judgment is announced.

The sura consists of three parts, which were probably written at different times. The first part contains a detailed description of the afterlife in verses 1-56 , with the reward of the godly in Paradise “to the right” and the punishment of the damned in Hell “to the left”. The middle section up to verse 74 deals with the signs of God's omnipotence in creation. The final part goes back to the lot of people in God's judgment. The passage: "This is truly an excellent Koran in a well-kept book that only those who have been made clean are allowed to touch" (verses 77-79) is interpreted by some as a prohibition for non-Muslims to touch the Koran. to recite.
