al-Mutaffifīn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Mutaffifīn ( Arabic المطففين al-Muṭaffifīn  'The Deceivers'; 'Those who shorten the measure') is the 83rd sura of the Koran , it contains 36 verses . Its title refers to the first verse. There are differences of opinion as to the date. Nöldeke / Schwally and Blachère place them under the suras of the first Meccan period (610–615). The Muslim commentators, for their part, disagree: some believe that it was the last sura to be written in Mecca before the emigration to Medina in 622, or that it is Meccan except for the first six verses. Ibn Abbas regards them as Medinic, except for verses 29-36. A compromise solution assumes that the sura was revealed between Mecca and Medina.

The sura threatens the deceivers or those who measure by double standards and whose acquired property causes their hearts to "rust" (verse 14) with God's retribution at judgment . When describing the paradisiacal delights of the righteous, "Tasnīm" is mentioned, this is the name of a spring in Paradise , the water of which falls from above.
