Abasa (sura)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abasa ( Arabic عبس ʿAbasa  'He frowned') is the 80th sura of the Koran , it contains 42 verses . The sura is one of the early parts of the Qur'an that wasrevealedin Mecca (610–615). Their title refers to the first verse.

The first ten verses criticize a wrongdoing that is attributed to the Prophet Mohammed in the Sunni tradition . He said he had some distinguished Quraishites with him and tried to convince them of his message. Then a blind man came to him who is unanimously identified as Abdallah ibn Umm Maktum, a cousin of Muhammad's first wife Khadijah . The blind man did not know that the prophet was visiting and wanted to be taught by him. Mohammed did not like this interruption in his conversation. He turned away from the blind man and is reprimanded by the Koran for this. The second part, with verses 11-16, describes the Koran as "memory ... on leaves that are cherished." The third and last part, from verse 17 onwards, describes the work of God on the human journey through life of nature, which was created to provide for man, and on the day of judgment .
