al-Muddaththir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Muddaththir ( Arabic المدثر, DMG al-Muddaṯṯir 'Who  has covered himself up') is the 74th sura of the Koran , it contains 56 verses . Their title refers to the first verse.

The opening word covered is in connection with Muhammad's first calling experience after the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him on Mount Hirā ' . Numerous Quran commentators, including Ibn Kathīr , Saheeh al-Buchari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj in his Saheeh Muslim , see the first seven verses as one of the very first revelations of the Koran. In his “History of the Qorāns”, Theodor Nöldeke also defines the chronological sequence immediately after Sura 96 , which is considered the first revealed Sura.

In the sequel, an argument with an adversary from Mecca is discussed (verses 11 to 37), as well as a warning against hellfire as God's retribution (verses 38 to 56). The inserted long verse 31, on the other hand, is to be regarded as medinic. He lists the four groups that are repeatedly addressed in Medina : the believers, the hypocrites , the people of the book and the unbelievers .
