Al-ʿAlaq ( Arabic العَلَق 'The Blood Clot') or Iqra (إقْرَ'Recite!') Is the 96th sura of the Koran . It consists of 19 verses. The sura was revealed in Mecca during the first period of revelation . It is considered the first revealed sura in chronological order .

According to a majority opinion, the first five verses of Sura 96 represent the beginnings of the revelations and thus the beginning of Muhammad's prophecy. Other traditions, on the other hand, want to see the beginnings of the revelations in Sura 74 , verses 1-7.
