List of the Koran suras

The Koran comprises 114 suras with a total of 6,236 verses ( Āyāt ) . The suras are roughly sorted according to their length (see also arrangement of the suras ).

With the exception of the ninth sura, all suras begin with the Basmala formula: Arabic بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم, DMG bismi ʾllāhi ʾr-raḥmāni ʾr-raḥīmi  'In the name of the merciful and gracious God'. A total of 29 suras begin with “ mysterious letters ”, the meaning of which is still unknown today. Based on the investigations by Hans Bauer, it can be assumed that the letters mentioned were part of the relevant suras even before the Koran was codified.
