Ponickau , Ponikau, Ponigkau is a Saxon- meißnisches noble family , the first time in 1301 in a document with Witego de Punickow appears.
history
The ancient, once very respected and wealthy family was based in Saxony , Upper Lusatia and Silesia . Legend has it that it was already known under the Slavic military leader Lecho in Poland and Bohemia. It had an headquarters of the same name in Upper Lusatia near Thiendorf . The family owned goods in Auligk , Fuchshain , Hollsteitz , Langhennersdorf , Pomßen near Leipzig, Wildschütz and Tackau, among others .

In 1816 Christoph Friedrich von Ponickau acquired Osterberg Castle in Bavaria and set up a family affide commission . On September 20, 1815, he was promoted to the rank of baron . His line owned the castles Osterberg, Hopferau (1839–1910), Niederraunau (1850-?), Füssen-Niederried and the St. Mang (1839–1909) monastery in Füssen. In Füssen, the von Ponickausche rule set up an administrative center for the southern property and a first class patrimonial court . The respective Fideikommissherr von Osterberg with Niederraunau was the hereditary Imperial Councilor of the Crown of Bavaria . The descendants of this line are - after the name and coat of arms were united with the Barons of Malsen in 1913 - the Barons of Malsen-Ponickau. In 1995 Dieter von Malsen-Ponickau sold the remaining family property in Osterberg.

- The family coat of arms is split and divided three times alternately by silver and red. On the helmet with red and white blankets, a golden double goblet , which is decorated with three green parakeet feathers.
- The coat of arms of the barons of Malsen-Ponickau is divided, above a silver diagonal right bar (Malsen) in red, below the family coat of arms. Above the shield 2 crowned helmets with red and silver covers, with a growing silver peacock (Malsen) on the right, a golden double goblet on top with 3 green laurel leaves (Ponickau) on the left.
