The Pratt & Whitney R-1690 Hornet was an aircraft engine made by the US manufacturer Pratt & Whitney . It was used on numerous aircraft from the 1920s and 1930s.
The air-cooled nine-cylinder - radial engine had a displacement of 1690 cubic inches (about 27.7 liters). The first test run took place in 1926, the first flight took place in 1927. After delivery of 2944 engines, production ended in 1942.
Licensed versions of the engine were produced in various countries, including the Italian Fiat A.59 . The BMW 132 , which was built by BMW in 1933 in the German Empire , was a further development of the licensed BMW Hornet .
