Princess Freeway in Lara |
The Princes Freeway is a trunk road in the south of the Australian state of Victoria . It consists of two separate sections: the eastern, 112 km long section connects Morwell with the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne , the western, 47 km long the western suburbs of the capital with Geelong . In this area it replaces the Princes Highway , which connects Sydney via Melbourne with Adelaide and Port Augusta . The freeway is numbered M1.
The western section serves as an important route for commuters and heavy traffic between Melbourne and Geelong, the eastern section connects the capital with the industrial region of Latrobe Valley and the holiday region of East Gippsland .
course
The western section of the route (also Princes Freeway West or Geelong Road ) begins in Altona at the West Gate junction, where the Western Ring Road and the old Geelong Road are connected, and ends in Geelong. This road has six lanes from Geelong to Werribee , while it has ten lanes near the junction with the Western Ring Road. The speed limit on this freeway is 100 km / h.
The eastern section of the route (also Princes Freeway East ) begins in Berwick as a four-lane freeway with a median. There are also a number of level connections, especially between Nar Nar Goon and Longwarry . In these areas the maximum speed is also limited to 100 km / h, only 110 km / h are permitted from Longwarry to Morwell. Traffic continues to flow through the towns of Yarragon and Trafalgar , where speeds are limited to 60 km / h and 80 km / h, respectively. Bypasses for these cities are being planned.
The west and east sections of the Princes Freeway are linked through Melbourne by the West Gate Freeway , CityLink Tollway and Monash Freeway . These five route sections together with the Geelong Ring Road form the M1, part of National Highway 1 .
The Princes Freeway includes or bypasses most of the older Princes Highway in this area. Where parts of the Princes Highway run parallel, they are numbered Alt 1 (in the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne), and as C101, C102, C103, C104 and C109 (in the western suburbs of Melbourne).
No overtaking for heavy vehicles
In March 2010, the Victoria State Government announced that trucks would be banned from the right lane on a 38 km stretch between Melbourne and Geelong. This was called for as early as 2005 and after the fire in the Burnley Tunnel with many victims, in which three people died, the discussion took off. The overtaking ban came into effect on July 1, 2010 between Kororoit Creek Road in Altona and Avalon Road in Lara and affects all vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 4.5 t, with the exception of buses and mobile homes. Anyone who does not adhere to it must pay an administrative fines of AU $ 358. This penal rule is an attempt that will later be rolled out to other major Victoria roads.

Recently completed expansion
Traralgon bypass and widening of the route to Sale
VicRoads has completed its rough planning and plans to build a bypass for Traralgon. Four routes were publicly proposed, of which Route No. 2 was preferred. Construction began in early 2012.
To the east of Traralgon, the Princes Highway (A1) between Traralgon and Sale is currently being expanded to four lanes, bringing it to freeway standard.
Geelong Ring Road
Main article: Geelong Ring Road
The State Government of Victoria and the Federal Government of Australia announced the construction of a new 23 km bypass through the western suburbs of Geelong from the Princes Freeway in Corio to the Princes Highway in Waurn Point . The bypass was completed in 2008 and 2009. 29 traffic lights are avoided and the journey time is reduced from 25–60 minutes to 15 minutes.
Pakenham bypass
The Pakenham bypass was the last missing part of a continuous freeway from Melbourne to Gippsland in east Victoria (with the exception of the individual traffic lights in Yarragon and Trafalgar). The State Government of Victoria and the Australian Federal Government jointly paid AU $ 242 million. Construction began in April 2005 and was completed on December 1, 2007. The 24 km long freeway from Beaconsfield to Nar Nar Goon bypasses Pakenham and Officer and thus provides an important high-speed connection between Gippsland and Melbourne.
Planned expansion
Increasing road safety
The proposed increase in traffic safety on the Princes Freeway East from Nar Nar Goon to Longwarry North is included in the financing plan Auslink 2 - National Transport Links - Growing Victoria's Economy (aka "the Mothership") .
Princes Highway East
The expansion of the Princes Highway from Traralgon to Sale to freeway standard is also to be financed with Auslink 2 (2009-2014).
Princes Highway West
The expansion of the Princes Highway from Waurn Ponds to Colac to freeway standard is also to be financed with Auslink 2 (2009-2014).
