1,1,1-Trimethylolpropane is an organic compound from the group of alcohols , which is in the form of a white, flammable powder.

Extraction and presentation

1,1,1-Trimethylolpropane is obtained from formaldehyde with n- butyraldehyde in the presence of sodium hydroxide, two moles of formaldehyde initially reacting in an aldol reaction with butyraldehyde to form 2,2-bis-hydroxymethylbutanal; a Cannizzaro reaction then takes place with a further mole of formaldehyde, the aldehyde group being reduced to the alcohol .

properties

1,1,1-Trimethylolpropane has three hydroxyl groups and thus enables polymers to be crosslinked three-dimensionally. The flash point is 179 ° C, the ignition temperature 375 ° C.

use

1,1,1-Trimethylolpropane is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic compounds (for example trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), for polyurethanes , polyester polyols and polyether polyols , binders and adhesives, synthetic lubricants, polyester and alkyd resin coatings ). These are used in the furniture, construction and automotive industries.
