action

In Purple Rain, Prince plays the young musician Kid, who competes with the band The Time at the First Avenue music club in Minneapolis and wants to achieve a musical breakthrough. The female lead in the film is Apollonia Kotero , who is called Apollonia Love in the film. She also wants to become famous as a singer. Kid wants to help her, but is too busy with himself. Morris Day is the lead singer of The Time and is drawn to Apollonia Love. He founds a girls band in which Apollonia should sing. In First Avenue but only two bands may occur and Kid provides more and more self-centered performances from. Billy, the owner of the music club, is not enthusiastic about kids antics. In addition, Kid has problems with his own band, in which there are more and more differences between the band members.

At home, Kid's parents quarrel almost every day, and his father beats his mother. This puts a lot of emotional strain on Kid and also disrupts his relationship with Apollonia. It seems like Kid and his band won't be performing at First Avenue for much longer . The star in the music club is clearly Morris Day and his girl band is very well received on their first test appearances. It is only through a personal stroke of fate that Kid realizes what has priority , and at First Avenue he now shows what he is musically capable of.

Reviews

“The vain as well as highly gifted kid (Prince) manages to rise in show business from dreary circumstances. - A perfect show with the courage to be noble, the highlight is of course the performance of the title song. "

"A technically adept music film that is probably only of interest to downright Prince fans."

“A lot of musicians have always tried their hand at the big screen. Sometimes more, but often less successfully and certainly, even the music genius Prince cannot predict a great cinema career. Nevertheless, he plays an absolutely suitable and believable role for him in 'Purple Rain', which makes him appear authentic. Director Albert Magnoli, who is making his feature film debut with the film, also co-wrote the script and staged this musical film in a rather gloomy manner and with the necessary atmosphere. The fact that it is extremely convincing in terms of atmosphere is of course also due to the songs written and sung by Prince, which all have that certain something and turn the soundtrack into a timeless piece of music. The theme song in particular is incredibly arranged. The OSCAR and the Grammy were rightly so. In 'Purple Rain', however, there is no simple piece of popcorn cinema that does without critical undertones in the society of the time. The plot tells a sometimes very tragic story that survived the turn of the millennium without being damaged. "

“Autobiographical film with pop idol Prince and the beautiful Apollonia about the rise of a rock star. A hit-filled image cultivation in which a pop star learns not only to think about himself. "
