The Queen Victoria is a cruise ship owned by Carnival Corporation & plc . The group operates the ship under its cruise brand Cunard Line , which ties in with the tradition of the former British shipping company of the same name. She is the third Cunard ship to bear the name of the British Queen Victoria .

history

The official start of construction of the ship at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera (Italy) is dated April 14, 2005, but the keel was not laid until May 19, 2006. After a little more than six months, the hull became water in January 2007 relaxed, in August 2007 the first test drives could begin. Camilla Mountbatten-Windsor, Duchess of Cornwall , wife of Crown Prince Charles, christened the ship in Southampton on December 10, 2007 . This is the first time in history that three ships under Cunard are named after British queens at the same time.

The Queen Victoria 2010 off Southampton

On December 11, 2007, the Queen Victoria went on a cruise for the first time with passengers on board. The maiden voyage took the ship from Southampton to Northern Europe to various Advent markets. Then it set off south to spend Christmas Day in Lisbon . On January 6, 2008, the Queen Victoria started her first, planned 106-day circumnavigation of the world.

Three weeks after her baptism, an outbreak of human norovirus infections broke out on the ship . 78 guests became infected, but the majority were healthy again after a short illness.

After a transatlantic tandem crossing together with the Queen Elizabeth 2 , the two ships met the Queen Mary 2 on January 13, 2008 . This meeting of the three major luxury liners in New York Harbor was accompanied by fireworks on the occasion of their joint departure on the evening of the same day. Due to another meeting of the three ships on April 22, 2008 in the port of Southampton, it was not the only one. On January 13, 2011, the Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 met the new Queen Elizabeth for the first time in New York , with the Queen Mary 2 docking not in Manhattan but in Brooklyn. The farewell to the three Cunard ships took place again with a large firework display.

From January 5, 2015 to January 17, 2015 Blohm + Voss installed exhaust gas cleaners.

The cabin sizes range from 14 to 198 m², the four “Grand Suites” are in the highest category, between 178 and 198 m² in size - with a wraparound balcony, private dining area and open-air bar. There are also two heated swimming pools, a two-story library with 6,000 books, Internet cafes, seven restaurants and ten bars, driving range / putting green, shuffleboard, table tennis, running path, spa and fitness center and a casino. In the so-called “Royal Court Theater” with 830 seats and private boxes behind glass, musicals, theater and shows are shown, in the “Victorian Ballroom”, for example, classic teatime and fencing courses take place during the day.

Life on board

Each trip is accompanied by four gentleman hosts who are exclusively there to dance with women traveling alone at the evening events and dance courses and to look after them on shore excursions. The men of advanced age proceed according to fixed rules so that equal rights for women are guaranteed.

120 employees work in the kitchen of the main restaurant "Britannia". B. process 300 liters of cream, 2500 eggs and 250 kilograms of meat.

Guests on the ships of the Cunard brand are divided according to a two-class system. The procedure comes from the time of earlier transatlantic liners (see Titanic : passenger area ). The upper class guests are named after the names of their restaurants and dine in separate restaurants, live in more luxurious suites and have their own bar and lounge. In contrast to the rest of the ship, caviar is also served as a dish here. The simple class passengers dine in the "Britannia" restaurant, but have access to all restaurants on board except the grills.

details

In 2005, before the keel was laid, Cunard Line bought a ship from Holland America Line , which was to be put into service as Queen Victoria . It entered service in 2005 as Arcadia for P&O Cruises . It also belongs to the Vista class and is largely identical to today's Queen Victoria .
