The Réserve naturelle régionale de la vallée de la Renaudie is a 73.43 hectare regional nature reserve in the Charente department ( Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , France ).

location

The Réserve naturelle régionale (RNR) follows and protects the course of the Renaudie , a right tributary of the Tardoire . The reserve is shared by the municipalities of Écuras , Montbron and Rouzède in the east of the Charente . It is 6 kilometers long, but in places only several tens of meters wide. Starting from Rouzède in the north, it extends to the confluence of the Renaudie and the Tardoire in the southwest.

The easiest way to access the nature reserve is via the D 699 from Montbron to Saint-Mathieu . After crossing the Tardoire, a signposted junction leads to the right to the car park at the south-western entrance to the Renaudie valley. The north entrance can be reached directly from Rouzède via the D 112 in the direction of Écuras.

Hydrography

The river system of the Renaudie, which generally drains to the southwest, is fed by two larger source rivers, which unite to the northwest below Puy d'Écuras and only form the actual Renaudie from here. The right source river coming from the direction of Rouzède is called Ruisseau de l'Étang de Planchas , as it is dammed northeast of Rouzède to the Étang de Planchas . The left source river has no name. It starts near the Dutch holiday development Le Chat . Around 500 meters after the two source rivers merge, the Renaudie receives an important right tributary from the north-northeast - the Ruisseau de Brisebois . The confluence of the Renaudie in the Tardoire is east of Montbron at 115 meters above sea level. The source of the Ruisseau de l'Étang de Planchas north of La Haute Prèze is 260 meters above sea level

The left arm of the spring no longer belongs to the nature reserve, but the last 500 meters of the right-hand Ruisseau de Brisebois do .

geology

Heavily tectonized Roussines leuco granite

The nature reserve is located in leukogranites of the Saint-Mathieu-Leukogranite that are around 310 million years old . Mostly it concerns the tectonically very heavily stressed facies of the Roussines leukogranite . The coplanar facies and the fine to medium-grain facies of the Champniers-Reilhac leukogranite are also subordinate . In a very short section north of Puy d'Écuras cuts through Ruisseau de l'Etang de Planchas migmatitische paragneisses . These metatexites strike northeast and dip at 60 degrees northwest. Immediately further north, another quartz vein runs through, which also strikes northeast. At the mouth of the Renaudie there is a Holocene Alluvium .

ecology

Knapweed butterfly Melitaea phoebe

The nature reserve has the following ecosystems : rivers, alluvial forests , ponds, dry rock walls (in the Boucu quarry ), mesophilic to hygrophilic meadows and border forest between sediment and granite sites . The river alluvium favors the growth of a mixed alder and ash forest.

flora

The flora is made up of over 300 species, including numerous orchids , columbines , wood anemones , hare bells , foam herbs and buttercups . Of these, 20 species enjoy national protection and 14 species are on the regional red list. Worth mentioning are, for example, eared hawkweed Pilosella lactucella , St. John's wort Hypericum linariifolium and street goosefoot Chenopodium urbicum .

fauna

In the reserve live 49 mammalian species (eg. B. Eurasian squirrel ), 130 species of birds with Schwarzspecht dryocopus Martius , Buntspecht Dendrocopos major , dipper Cinclus cinclus , Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria and Kingfisher Alcedo atthis , 12 amphibian species with Gelbbauchunke Bombina variegata and 8 reptiles , including the Zauneidechse Lacerta agilis . Among the invertebrates, 53 species of butterflies (including the scabiosa pied butterfly Euphydryas aurinia ), 37 dragonfly species and beetles (such as the stag beetle ) are found.

Nature trails

Location map of the protected area

Three educational trails were installed, each of which takes two and a half hours. The nature trail on the topic of biodiversity is 4 kilometers long, the one on geology 3.5 kilometers and the one on the hydrosphere 3 kilometers.

Long-distance hiking trail

Through the northern section of the nature reserve leads between Rouzède and Châtain Besson distance footpath GR de Pays entre et Angoumois Périgord , of the Angoumois with the Périgord connects.

Railway line

Through the valley of Renaudie once ran railway line of Chemins de fer économiques des Charentes , the Angoulême with Montbron and Roumazières-Loubert linked. The narrow-gauge railway (gauge 1000 mm) began its ascent here on the 353 meter high Massif de l'Arbre . The 67-kilometer route was driven between 1912 and 1946.

history

On November 4, 1998, the affected communities had already established the status of a Réserve naturelle volontaire (RNV) for the protected area . The area received its current status as RNR (under the number RNR 134) on February 13, 2012.

Others

According to the IUCN category , the nature reserve falls under category IV. It is looked after by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels ( CEN - Conservatory for Natural Spaces - CEN Poitou-Charentes in Poitiers ) of the Poitou-Charentes (or Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Owned by the community association Communauté de communes Seuil Charente Périgord . The World Database on Protected Areas maintains the reserve under number 555559612.
