The Río Mayo is an approximately 350 km long left tributary of the Río Huallaga in the San Martín region in central northern Peru .
River course
The Río Mayo rises in the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera near the border point of the regions of San Martín, Amazonas and Loreto . The headwaters are located at an altitude of around 1750 m within the Bosque de Protección de Alto Mayo forest reserve . From there it flows in a predominantly south-easterly direction through a basin landscape that extends between the central and eastern Cordillera. It has numerous narrow bends in the river on its course . It flows past the regional capital Moyobamba to the east and flows into the Río Huallaga south of the city of Tarapoto at an altitude of 256 m . The Río Mayo flows through the provinces of Rioja , Moyobamba , Lamas and San Martín . Larger tributaries are Río Yuracyacu, Río Tonchima and Río Indoche from the right and Río Cumbaza from the left.
Catchment area
The catchment area of the Río Mayo covers an area of about 9750 km². It extends over the north-west of the San Martín region and the north-east of the adjacent province of Rodríguez de Mendoza (Amazon region). The catchment area borders in the northeast on the catchment area of the Río Cainarache, Río Shanusi and Río Paranapura , all tributaries of the Río Huallaga. In the north, the catchment area borders on that of the Marañón tributaries Río Cahuapanas, Río Potro and Río Nieva, and in the west and southwest on the catchment areas of Río Huayabamba , Río Saposoa and Río Sisa , all tributaries of the Río Huallaga.
