Róbert Bezák CSsR (born March 1, 1960 in Prievidza , Slovakia ) is a Roman Catholic religious and former Archbishop of Trnava .

Life

Róbert Bezák joined the Redemptorist Order in 1979 , made his profession in 1983 and was ordained a priest on June 14, 1984 .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on February 18, 2009 Archbishop of Trnava . The President Emeritus of the Pontifical Committee for World Eucharistic Congresses , Cardinal Jozef Tomko , donated him episcopal ordination on June 6th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Mario Giordana , Apostolic Nuncio in Slovakia, and Stanislav Zvolenský , Archbishop of Bratislava . As a motto he chose Imple Nos Misericordia .

On July 1, 2012, Bezák was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. removed from office. The background to the recall remained largely unclear, but it is generally assumed that there is a connection with Bezák's financial conduct and his allegations against his predecessor Ján Sokol and the resulting apostolic visitation . Larger parts of the population strongly sympathize with Bezák. A petition with around 12,000 signatures against the recall was submitted.

Under Pope Francis there have been signals for a possible rehabilitation of Bezák since mid-2013. In addition, several petitions were started in neighboring Austria. Bezák has been in the Redemptorist monastery in Bussolengo near Verona since December 2013 . In June 2014 he met Pope Francis for the first time after a general audience in St. Peter's Square .
