The river rises in Lattengebirge one kilometer east of Moosenalm and opens in the region of Baumgarten in the oxbow lake, a part of the hall Achsees . Almost all of the way to the source is a steep forest road along the stream, which opens up the western part of the Lattengebirge.

The Röthelbach does not have its own river code number, but is subsumed under the river code number 186677 Saalach from Weißbach to Weißbach (Grabenbach) .

Röthelbachklause

The historic Röthelbachklause , which was first mentioned in a document in 1392, is located about 450 meters above the hamlet of Baumgarten .

Debris flow

As a result of severe storms and heavy rains, several mudslides on July 5, 2010 completely destroyed the forest road that ran next to it, and also partially destroyed federal road 21 near Baumgarten. The federal road had to be closed completely until July 20, 2010, the forest road for a year until October 2011.
