Rüdiger Schmidt-Grépály

Rüdiger Schmidt-Grépály (born July 13, 1952 in Bad Oldesloe , Schleswig-Holstein ) is a German cultural manager and former head of the Friedrich Nietzsche College of the Weimar Classic Foundation .

Research and Academic Career

After graduating from high school in 1972, he studied philosophy , political science and literature in Kiel , Freiburg im Breisgau and Marburg until 1980 . In 1980 he received his doctorate in philosophy with a study of the early work of Friedrich Nietzsche with the professors Hans Heinz Holz , Gert Mattenklott and Katharina Kanthack. From 1983 to 1985 he worked in Florence as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Italian Foreign Ministry with Mazzino Montinari , who, due to his studies in Weimar, had published the first unadulterated Nietzsche edition since the 1960s .

Schmidt-Grépály worked as a lecturer in philosophy at the universities of Florence , Kiel , Oldenburg , Bremen (until 1997), Jena and Weimar (since 1998). From 1989 to 1995 he was at the University of Oldenburg with Rudolf Prinz zur Lippe philosophical director of Karl Jaspers lectures on questions of time . Schmidt-Grépály worked in 1994 at the Bremen Theater together with the pioneer of German dance theater, Johannes Kresnik. Schmidt-Grépály also moderated the radio program “Doppel-Kopf” on hr2 at irregular intervals with interlocutors such as Nike Wagner , Almos Csongár or Ágnes Heller . In 1999 Schmidt-Grépály designed a Nietzsche evening in Brussels under the title “I am not a person, I am dynamite” (Friedrich Nietzsche) as the official contribution of the Free State of Thuringia to the German Presidency of the European Union . The Nietzsche production took place with the actors Silvia Fink and Harald Schwaiger from the German National Theater Weimar and Luise Härtwig, a graduate of the Weimar Music High School. The piece was subsequently u. a. performed in Weimar, Naumburg, Munich and Lyon.

Foundation of the Friedrich Nietzsche College

Schmidt-Grépály came to Weimar in 1992 with the idea of turning the “ Villa Silberblick ”, the legendary former Nietzsche archive , into a place for free spirits in the Nietzsche sense . After initially working as a freelancer for the Weimarer Klassik Foundation from 1993 to 1999 , Schmidt-Grépály became head of the Friedrich Nietzsche College in October 1999 . In 2002 he was awarded the “Premio Internazionale Federico Nietzsche” by the “Associazione Internazionale di Studi e Ricerche Federico Nietzsche” ( Palermo , Italy) for his initiative to establish and develop the college . Shortly after the 10th anniversary of the college, in January 2010 it received the award “Weimar - Place of Diversity”.

The project "Future of Modernism" funded by the Ernst Abbe Foundation Jena was founded in May 2016 by the Friedrich Nietzsche College, of which Schmidt-Grépály is the managing director. So far, various workshops for schoolchildren and discussion events or lectures have been held in this context. a. organized by and with Ryosuke Ohashi , Raymond Geuss , Francois Kervégan , Michael Quante and Klaus Vieweg . Since Schmidt-Grépály has no longer been head of the Friedrich Nietzsche College since February 2018, but has officially retired, he is increasingly dedicating himself to this project and cooperating on it, among other things. a. with IG Metall .

Before the 2014 state elections in Thuringia, Schmidt-Grépály publicly stood up for Bodo Ramelow ( Die Linke ).

Schmidt-Grépály is also the editor of the series of writings from the Friedrich Nietzsche College , which consists of 18 books and was published by VDG Weimar & Bauhaus-Universitätsverlag.
