The share index for renewable energies , engl. Renewable Energy Industrial Index (RENIXX) was developed by the International Economic Forum for Renewable Energies (IWR) in 2005/2006 and is the first global industry share index that aims to show the performance of companies in the renewable energies sector . The calculation is based on the principles of a performance index and takes place with a time delay of around 15 minutes from the current price data, so that an intraday display is possible.

The International Economic Forum for Renewable Energies (IWR) was founded in 1996 by Norbert Allnoch and has the legal form of a GmbH. It is an independent institute with a focus on the regenerative energy industry.

Norbert Allnoch has been dealing with renewable energies since 1982. Since 1988 he has been head of the wind energy research group at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and developed what is probably the oldest German location database for wind turbines. This data material served as the basis for numerous market analyzes and publications on the market development of wind energy. In 1995, Allnoch defined "the interdisciplinary consideration of regenerative energy supply (climate protection) and regenerative plant and system construction (industrial policy) for the three areas of electricity, heat and fuels" as the main tasks for his institute.

The RENIXX share index is intended to map the price development of companies in the field of renewable or regenerative energies such as wind energy , solar energy , bioenergy , geothermal energy , hydropower and fuel cells . The official start date was May 1, 2006. The RENIXX World segment contains international stocks with the 30 highest market capitalizations on the stock exchanges in Germany.

  • In order to be accepted, companies have to generate more than 50 percent of their turnover in the field of renewable energies.
  • No more than 50% of the companies in the index may belong to the same sector (e.g. wind energy, solar energy, etc.).
  • The fuel cells and utilities sectors should not be represented with more than 20 percent in the index.
  • Companies cannot be majority owned by the state.

The inclusion in the index and the weighting are based on the free float market capitalization on the German stock exchanges. A rebalancing takes place every quarter, a decision is made every six months. Although the index has a WKN and an ISIN, it cannot be traded on the stock exchange via a certificate or similar. A similar index are the European Renewable Energy Index (ERIX) and the ÖkoDAX .

The index started on April 28, 2006 with 1000 points and reached over 1900 points at the turn of the year 2007/2008. Its decline began in 2008 - mainly in the wake of the international financial crisis . By November 2012, the index had dropped to an all-time low of 146 points.
