Ragnar Hovland

Ragnar Hovland (born April 15, 1952 in Bergen , Norway ) is a Norwegian writer , children's book author , translator and musician .

life and work

He grew up in Fusa and Luster , attended grammar school (vidergående skole) in Stavanger and then studied Romance studies , English and literature at the University of Bergen .

His debut novel Alltid fleire dagar was published in 1979. Ever since the publication of Floating Over the Water (1982), he has been considered one of the central authors of contemporary Norwegian literature, especially the literature on Nynorsk .

Hovland's novels are often set in his homeland, Vestlandet, and have numerous references to pop culture . The ambiguous amalgamation of seriousness and humor is striking for his narrative style.

He is the translator of numerous children's books as well as plays and musicals. For example, he translated works by Janosch , Erich Kästner , Christine Nöstlinger , Roald Dahl , Botho Strauss and Stephen Sondheim into Norwegian.

Musically he has appeared as a keyboard player and vocalist in the band Dei nye Kapellanane .

Hovland is the grandson of the bishop and Bible translator Ragnvald Indrebø.
