Rainer K. Wick (born June 18, 1944 in Mechernich ) is a German art historian , art educator , specialist journalist, photographer and retired university professor.

Life

Wick attended the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in Bonn , where he passed the school leaving examination in 1963. From 1963 to 1969 he studied art history , art education , pedagogy and sociology in Bonn and Cologne . In 1969 he passed the 1st state examination for teaching at upper secondary level. After the second state examination in 1971, he was Studienassessor , then teacher and senior teacher at the Technical School of Design in Cologne, where he taught in the type-specific subjects (design). In 1975 he received his doctorate from René König with an art-sociological dissertation on Happening and Fluxus . Until 1978 he worked in school, most recently as director of studies in the function of a pedagogical specialist for art and design at the overall seminar in Cologne.

From 1979 to 1985 he was a professor in the field of design and art education at the University of Essen . His main area of ​​work was teaching in the design engineering course (teaching degree SII, professional subject). In 1985 he completed his habilitation in art education at the University of Essen with an examination of the educational concepts of the Bauhaus . In 1986 he was appointed to the chair for art and cultural education at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , which he held until his retirement in 2009. His teaching activities ranged from art didactics and art studies to artistic practice with a focus on drawing and photography.

On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the University of Wuppertal presented him with the commemorative publication “Topoi. Contributions to a cultural-archaeological determination of the place ” , whose individual contributions document the breadth of Wick's scientific interests. Since 2010 Wick u. a. for the online culture magazine "Musenblätter" and for the "Portal Art History".

In addition to general questions of art didactics, special topics from the history of art and design of the 20th century as well as the history of art in Italy and the sociology of art, the following areas in particular are the focus of Rainer K. Wick's teaching, research and publication activities: the Bauhaus and his pedagogical concepts, the German Werkbund as an institution of art and cultural pedagogy, individual questions of historical art pedagogy, possibilities and limits of design theory, photo history and photo didactics.

In the area of ​​artistic practice, Wicks focuses on photography. He has come to the fore in exhibitions and publications primarily with his travel photographs, mainly in black and white, with which he moves in the tradition of classical modern photography and so-called subjective photography .

In addition to book publications and articles in magazines, catalogs and encyclopedias, Wick has the university series “Context. Series of publications for art, art education and cultural education ”at the University of Wuppertal founded and published (discontinued in 2009). He is a member of the German Society for Photography eV (DGPh), the Bauhaus-Archives eV Berlin and the ICOM Germany (German National Committee of the International Museum Council).
