So far it has had a total print run of over six million book copies. In 1988 he received the Friedrich Gerstäcker Prize for his historical Australian novel Abby Lynn - Banished to the End of the World . In 1998, the Federal Agency for Civic Education counted his work Under the Jacaranda Tree among the 100 novels in world literature of the 20th century. Also in 1998 he received the 3rd International Eifel Literature Prize for the novel The Secret of the White Monks . The secret of the mapmaker was awarded the literary prize of the Moerser youth book jury as well as book of the month by the working group youth book Göttingen. In 2005 he was awarded the Buxtehuder Bulle youth book prize for The Lagoon of the Galleys . Schröder's works have been translated into more than a dozen languages, including French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Turkish, Czech, Slovak, Latvian, Dutch, Japanese, and Russian.
Life
Schröder grew up in East Berlin . Shortly before the construction of the Berlin Wall , his family fled with him to the West, where they initially lived in the camp for a year. They then moved to Dortmund and Düsseldorf , where he graduated from high school in 1971 and then studied opera singing to become an opera singer. Schröder played the guitar in a rock band called Union Jack .
At the request of his father, a former head physician at the Berlin Charité , he also aimed for an academic career. First he completed a two-year officer training course with the Air Force and then volunteered at the Rheinische Post in order to take up law studies at the University of Cologne in 1974 . In addition, he studied German , theater , film and television studies and wrote texts and articles for newspapers and the WDR . In 1976 Franz Schneider Verlag bought his first book for young people , “In die Trap”, whereupon Schröder dropped out of studies after the seventh semester.
Other novels followed, which were published by Franz Schneider Verlag, Stalling and Heyne Verlag . In 1977 he made his debut as a playwright. He worked for nine months as a lecturer and then as a freelance writer . In 1980 he and his wife Helga settled on a farm in southern Virginia on Smith Mountain Lake .
Rainer M. Schröder also wrote a number of non-fiction music books, including the biography of the Scorpions , published by Heyne Verlag in 1980 , with whom he was friends, with whom he accompanied on tours in France, England and California and with whom he had spent weeks in the recording studio.
Schröder travels and collects information for his adventure novels. Today he lives in Palm Coast (Florida) and in the Bergisches Land .
His novels often take place in the period from 1100 to 1900 (for example The Secret of the Cardmaker , The Legacy of the Old Pilgrim or The Monastery of the Heretics ). An exception are the books from the time of the Second World War , such as The Long Journey of Jakob Stern . The two-parter Liberty 9 is a special feature, as it is a science fiction novel and Schröder deviated from his genre for the first time. Schröder is also the author of the Kommissar Klicker series, which appeared as a book series for young people and a radio play series.
