Flora and fauna

flora

The Rajon is characterized by its location on the slopes of the ridge of the Volga plateau . Due to this location and the difficult accessibility of the region, the Rajon is one of the most heavily forested areas in the Saratov Oblast.

fauna

Due to the extensive forests, the Volga with its many islands below the reservoir and the smaller rivers and streams that flow from the ridge to the Volga, the fauna, especially in the Wolski rajon, is extremely species-rich. In the forests you can mainly find different species of elk , wild boar and arctic hare . Large colonies of marmots have settled on the rivers . In terms of birds, there are mainly various types of fowl such as the capercaillie and other pheasant species as well as partridges .

structure

The Rajon is divided into urban parishes with the city of Wolsk and an urban-type settlement, as well as 14 rural parishes with a total of 62 villages. The largest settlements (as of 2006) within the Rajon are:

  • Wolsk 69,603 inhabitants (administrative center)

Agriculture focuses on the cultivation of cereals, sunflowers and various vegetables.
