Ramy Youssef
Ramy Youssef (born March 26, 1991 in New York City , New York ) is an American stand-up comedian , actor and screenwriter of Egyptian origin. In 2020 he was awarded the Golden Globe Award for best series leading actor - comedy or musical for his work on the autobiographical series Ramy .
life and career
Ramy Youssef was born in the New York borough of Queens , the son of Egyptian migrants who came to the United States independently in the 1980s . He was raised in the Muslim faith and is still a practicing Muslim today. The following years he grew up, together with a sister, in the city of Rutherford , in the US state of New Jersey , where he attended the local high school. After graduation, he moved to Rutgers University , where he began studying political and economic sciences . In his spare time he appeared on sketch shows. He left university at the age of 19 and enrolled in the renowned William Esper Studio in New York for their acting program. He spent the next two years there before moving to Los Angeles with an offer for a series role .
The series, for which he took to the West Coast, was the youth - sitcom See Dad Run , in which he as Kevin Kostner was occupied in one of the lead roles. He played the role from 2012 until the series was discontinued in 2014 after a running time of three seasons. After the series ended, he appeared in guest roles in Gortimer Gibbon - My Life on Normal Street and Mr. Robot . In the films Why Him? and Don't Worry, you can't run away , he took on small supporting roles.
In 2019, the ten-part autobiographical series Ramy , in which Youssef plays the eponymous character of Ramy Hassan , was published by steaming provider Hulu . In the series he portrays, as in his real life, an American from a migrant family. He is also executive producer and developer of the series. Shortly after the release, it was extended for another season. Youssef himself wrote most of the scripts for the first season. In January 2020 he was awarded the Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Series Leading Actor - Comedy or Musical .
Youssef is a regular guest on US late-night shows with his comedy appearances .
