Randall Gelech (born February 2, 1984 in Wynard , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player .

Career

Randall Gelech began his career in 2000 with the Kelowna Rockets in the Canadian Junior League WHL . In his first two seasons, Gelech could not yet convince on the offensive, scoring only 18 points in 99 league games. During the 2002/03 season he finally managed the breakthrough in the juniors with 25 goals and 20 assists . The Rockets took the top spot in the WHL at the end of the regular season and eventually won the President's Cup in the playoffs . In the subsequent Memorial Cup tournament, the Rockets failed in the semi-finals at the Hull Olympiques .

Due to his improved performance, the teams of the NHL became aware of him and so he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2003 by the Phoenix Coyotes in the seventh round at position 208.

In the 2003/04 season Gelech rose within his team to the leading player and was the Rockets' top scorer with 30 goals and 19 assists. The team played a good season again and after the regular season again took first place in the WHL. The Rockets also played successfully in the playoffs and Gelech led them with 10 goals to the conference final, where they were eliminated. Even so, they were allowed to host the Memorial Cup finals and eventually won the tournament. Gelech was one of the top scorers of the tournament with three goals and was called to the All-Star Team.

In the summer of 2004 he left the juniors and joined the Utah Grizzlies from the AHL , who served as the Phoenix Coyotes farm team . He had a solid first season with 27 points and 15 goals, making him the team's second top scorer. However, the Grizzlies finished last in the AHL and were disbanded at the end of the season.

The Phoenix Coyotes found a new cooperation partner in the AHL in the San Antonio Rampage and Randall Gelech played for the team from then on. But San Antonio was also in last place in the regular season and Gelech showed weaker performance than in the previous season with 21 scorer points and by far the worst plus / minus value of his team.

In the 2006/07 season the Rampage played better again and Gelech also found their way back to old form and set a new personal best with 34 points. Still, they missed the playoffs again and the Phoenix Coyotes did not renew his contract in the summer of 2007.

The Detroit Red Wings then signed him and let him play for their farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins . But even in the 2007/08 season Gelech had no success. Like his previous professional teams, the Griffins could not qualify for the playoffs and he played his weakest season so far with seven goals and eight assists. When he could not fight for a regular place at the Griffins at the beginning of the following season, he was loaned to league rival Rochester Americans .

Randall Gelech has his strengths in physically tough and defensive play, which means that he can help his team especially when he is outnumbered. Its weaknesses, however, are its low offensive productivity and lack of speed.

In August 2010 he moved to Italy for the first time: He signed a contract for one year with the Italian Serie A2 club WSV Sterzing Broncos and won the championship title with his new team in the 2010/11 season and consequently rose to the highest Italian division, the Serie A1 on. In May 2011, Randall Gelech extended his contract with the Broncos for another season. He let his active career end with the Bentley Generals in the Chinook Hockey League.
