Rantoul is a village with 13,674 inhabitants (2010) in Illinois . The city is located 23 km northeast of Champaign , 74 km southeast of Bloomington , 129 km southeast of Peoria , 176 km south of Chicago , and 179 km northwest of Indianapolis and belongs to Champaign County .

The city is named after Robert Rantoul, the former director of the Illinois Central Railroad .

Rantoul's geographic coordinates are 40 ° 18 ′  N , 88 ° 9 ′  W (40.304600, −88.152070). The Interstate 57 leads west of the city in north-south direction on Rantoul over. US Highway 45 runs parallel to this through the center and crosses US Highway 136 there in an east-west direction .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Rantoul has a total area of ​​19.0  km² , of which 18.8 km² is land and 0.3 km² (= 1.50%) is water.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Rantoul lived in 12,918 people. The population density was 685.7 people per km ². There were 6161 housing units at an average of 328.6 per km². The Rantoul population was 76.69% White , 16.88% Black or African American , 0.47% Native American , 1.75% Asian , 0.05% Pacific Islander , 0.89% said other races belong to and 3.27% named two or more races. 2.69% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Rantouls distributed to 5330 households out of which 33.7% were living in children under 18 years. 43.9% of households were married, 15.0% had a female head of household without a husband, and 36.8% were not families. 30.8% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.2% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.

The population was split into 28.6% minors, 9.5% 18–24 year olds, 32.2% 25–44 year olds, 18.2% 45–64 year olds and 11.4% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 women there were 91.0 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 86.7 men.

The median household income in Rantoul was 36,904 US dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 43,543 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 32,440 versus $ 22,382 for women. The per capita income was $ 17,948. 10.7% of the population and 9.5% of families had an income below the poverty line , of which 14.7% of minors and 4.6% of those aged 65 and over were affected.

Rail transport

Amtrak , the nationwide rail passenger transport system in the United States, connects Rantoul with Champaign-Urbana , Mattoon, Effingham, Centralia , Du Quoin, and Carbondale southbound daily on the Saluki and Illinois long-distance trains . In the opposite direction, the two trains go via Gilman, Kankakee, Homewood to Chicago .

air traffic

In 1917, Rantoul was chosen because of its proximity to the railroad as the location for a military airfield with an air force school, which continued to grow in the 1930s and dominated the city's economy with several thousand soldiers stationed there. After the Second World War , the air force base was renamed Chanute Air Force Base . This was closed in 1993. Since then it has been partially used by the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum and the Rantoul National Aviation Center .
