Life

Soyer, like his twin brother and other brothers, was born in Russia as the children of the Jewish scholar, author and teacher Abraham Soyer (1867-1940). The family emigrated to the United States with their five children in 1912, where they last settled in the New York Bronx . He began his artistic training at the Cooper Union , where he met his lifelong friend Chaim Gross, among others . Other educational institutions in New York were the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League of New York , where his teachers included Guy Pene du Bois and Boardman Robinson . It was during this time that he learned about the gritty, city-related issues of the Ashcan School members and became one of the representatives of American realism .

Other topics Soyers also included portraits of friends and family, nudes and again and again the city of New York and its people. All his life he painted realistically, the trends of painting of the 1940s and 1950s remained alien to him. In 1930 he began teaching at the John Reed Club in New York, an institution close to the American socialists. He also taught at the Art Students League , the New School for Social Research and the National Academy of Design . In the 1930s he taught as part of the Works Progress Administration's government program as a participant in the Federal Art Project .

The American art collector Victor Ganz began collecting in the early 1940s with the purchase of works by Louis Eilshemius , Jules Pascin and Raphael Soyer. Soyers' younger twin brothers, Moses Soyer and Isaac Soyer, were also painters.

In 1951, Raphael Soyer was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy . Soyer died of cancer. He was married; the couple had a daughter.

Exhibitions

Since the early 1930s, Soyer's works have been shown regularly in the annual or biennial exhibitions. For example in the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan , the Art Institute of Chicago , the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , in the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC , the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine arts .
