The town hall of Kalkar

The Kalkar Town Hall is located on the market square in the center of the city of Kalkar on the Lower Rhine . The late Gothic brick building was built by the Klever master builder Johann Wyrenberg by 1446 and is one of the monumental town halls in the Rhineland . It stands as since 12 June 1984 monument under monument protection .

description

The current City Hall was some 200 years after becoming a city built Kalkar. The free-standing, three-story brick building with a slate hipped roof on the east side of the market square is one of the most important medieval buildings on the entire Lower Rhine. At the height of the eaves rise on a pointed arch frieze slightly projecting battlements and Eckwarten on Pendentifs .

In the middle of the facade protrudes a slender octagonal stair tower , with three sides of the octagon protruding from the facade facing the market. The entrance with a round flight of stairs is at the bottom of the stair tower. The upper floor of the tower protrudes over the frieze of pointed arches on stone consoles and ends with a pointed roof.

The Ratskeller on the ground floor, which now houses a restaurant , is half covered by the floor due to the backfill. A cornice runs around the building at the level of the window sills on the second floor .

On the front facade, two large cross- story windows are set in between cross-story windows , the other three fronts are illuminated through cross-story windows.

Renaissance portal

The Renaissance portal from sandstone in the stair tower was built originally in 1558 and was completely reconstructed in the course of reconstruction in the 20th century. It is flanked with columns topped with putti . The statue of Justitia is located above the top of the gable .

history

The town hall was built between 1438 and 1446 by Johann Wyrenberg, who also built the swan tower as the builder for the Duke of Kleve . In 1694 and again in the middle of the 19th century, extensive renovations were carried out on the town hall. Not only did the councilors meet in it, it also housed the meat and cloth hall and concealed the scales .

On the east side of the town hall ran a canal that ran through the old town like a canal from north to south and connected the moats .

In the Second World War , the northern half of the building was almost completely destroyed. The town hall was later rebuilt in the old style. This was based on an altarpiece by Jan Joest , but the room arrangement was changed.
