Raymond John Lahey , also Raymond J. Lahey , (born May 29, 1940 in St. John’s , Newfoundland , Canada ) is a former Roman Catholic bishop of Antigonish in Nova Scotia , Canada.

Life

Raymond John Lahey studied at the University of Ottawa and made his bachelor's degree (B.Th.) in theology in 1961 and his licentiate (L.Th.) in 1963 . He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1963 . In 1966 he made his Ph.D. with magna cum laude and was initially assistant professor for religious studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland , later associate professor and member of the Senate.

After serving as vicar general in the Archdiocese of St. John’s , Lahey was made an honorary prelate by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

On July 5, 1986, he was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Saint Georges, since 2007 Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador in Newfoundland. The episcopal ordination in Corner Brook donated him on August 3, 1986 Alphonsus Liguori Penney , Archbishop of St. John's; Co- consecrators were Joseph Faber MacDonald , Bishop of Grand Falls , and his predecessor Richard Thomas McGrath . On April 5, 2003, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Antigonish . The inauguration took place on June 12 of the same year.

He was involved in numerous organizations, including being a chancellor at Saint Francis Xavier University and a member of the American Academy of Religion .

Lahey was arrested at Ottawa Airport in September 2009 for importing and possessing child pornography and was released on bail; he was ordered not to visit parks or use the internet. His resignation was on September 26, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. accepted. The main hearing in the criminal proceedings was set for April 26, 2011. On May 4, 2011, he made a full confession in the Ottawa Court of Justice .

In December 2011, the prosecution called for between 18 and 22 months' imprisonment, followed by a two-year probationary period. On January 4, 2012, Lahey was sentenced to 15 months in prison. Since he had already been in pre- trial detention for eight months and counted twice, the court ordered Lahey's release. The Vatican transferred the bishop emeritus to lay status in May 2012 .
