The Rörd Braren Bereederungs-GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1990 by Rörd Braren. She gradually enlarged her fleet. Most of the ships are operated under long-term charter .

Ships

The multi-purpose freighters Cellus and Timbus have been transporting forest products for the SÖDRA Skogsägarna cooperative, a company in the Swedish paper industry , since they were commissioned . Both have an exhaust gas aftertreatment by means of SCR - catalyst (addition of urea ). This catalytic converter reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides, unburned hydrocarbons (HC), soot and noise. The systems were supplied by Siemens , where this technology was developed under the name SINOx for power plants on land.

The multipurpose vessel Bremer Johanna is from the shipping company Braren bereedert and serves the Bremen shipping company E & B GmbH , which in 1951 by the GmbH Eilemann & Bischoff was founded and has specialized in the transport of forest products since the 1990s. She is currently sailing in the North and Baltic Seas as well as in the Mediterranean . The multi-purpose freighters African Wind , African Forest and African River were built for the Braren shipping company, are managed by it and operate for the BOCS line in the West Africa service.

The multi-purpose freighters Bocs Vision and Bocs Spirit are also managed by the Braren shipping company.

In mid-February 2020, another multi-purpose freighter was launched at the Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes in Hoogezand . The 86 m long and 15 m wide Annika Braren with a load capacity of 5035 tdw has a Caterpillar (MaK) main engine that runs on gas oil . A catalytic converter is also available here for exhaust gas aftertreatment. To reduce fuel consumption, a Flettner rotor from Eco Flettner GmbH will also be installed on the forecastle in summer 2020 .

Emissions reduction

Catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxides

On the multipurpose freighter Cellus , exhaust gas aftertreatment takes place in a catalytic converter with ceramic elements made of titanium oxide by adding urea . The system known as SCR ( Selective Catalytic Reduction ) reduces the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas , the unburned hydrocarbons (HC), the soot and the noise. This system was supplied by Siemens , who developed this technology under the name SINOx for power plants . In the shipping date around 80 plants are used. Only low-sulfur fuel (heavy oil) with a sulfur content of 0.6% to 0.9% is bunkered . In shipping, the sulfur content fluctuates between 1 and 4.5%, with an average of 2.5%.

Dry desulphurization of the exhaust gases

Since 2010, the multi-purpose freighter Timbus has been testing the first dry desulphurisation system, a technology called DryEGCS that has proven itself in land power plants. In the power plant industry, the process of dry desulphurization with the addition of powdered hydrated lime has been used successfully for around 40 years. On the Timbus , hydrated lime is added in granulate form . The prototype system is being tested in practice as part of a research project jointly by the Braren shipping company, the Couple Systems company and the Institute for Energy Technology at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg .

Awards

Blue Angel

Five ships, the Cellus , Timbus , Forester , Bremer Anna and Bremer Elena , carry the Blue Angel as a sign of environmentally friendly shipping. You drive paper and cellulose for the pulp group SÖDRA, which attaches great importance to environmentally friendly transport and supported the shipowner with the conversion. SÖDRA honors the environmental friendliness of the ships with an appropriate charter. Also are port charges for environmentally friendly vessels in Sweden lower.

The Cellus received on 21 November 2002 as the first merchant ship in the world the Blue Angel, an eco-label , which has a high profile in Germany. The Blue Angel for environmentally friendly shipping is awarded by the Federal Environment Agency and places high demands on the shipowner, the crew and the ship with its technical equipment. Requirements are good personnel management, optimal safety management, well functioning waste management, treatment of waste and bilge water , CFC- free refrigerants , TBT- free underwater paint and lower sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions in the exhaust gases . All of these requirements are checked, approved, evaluated and documented by experts.

Clean Marine Award

At the 2004 Green Week in Brussels , the shipowner Rörd Braren was presented with the Clean Marine Award , also known as the “Environment Oscar” of the European Commission , by EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström . Braren's exemplary pioneering work in the testing and application of environmentally friendly technologies in ship operations was recognized.
