The 14 m high octagonal Rehberg tower on the eponymous Rehberg ( 576.8  m above sea  level ) in the Palatinate Forest ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) is made of hewn sandstones and is a listed building .

Geographical location

The tower stands in the north of the forest area of the local community Waldrohrbach im Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the northern part of the Vosges are collectively called.

description

The crenellated parapet

The actual tower structure rises on a base of 2 m height, which reaches a height of 14 m with the parapet. A nine-step outside staircase leads to the pointed arched doorway of the tower, while a spiral staircase with 49 steps leads to its 12.8 m high viewing platform with a crenellated outer wall . The base forms an octagon with sides of 1.5 m each, its circumference is 8 × 1.5 = 12 m. A floor space of 15.75 m² can be calculated from the dimensions.

The Rehbergturm stands between half-height trees, some of which have grown up next to one another. However, they are all lower than the tower so that the view from the platform is not obstructed.

history

Dedication plaque

The tower was inaugurated on September 17, 1862 after a five-month construction period. The construction was initiated by a Christian Zoeppritz from Darmstadt , who is called "Forester" or "Revierforster" in some later sources. Since the term "forester" used to generally refer to a forester, it is likely that the initiator of the tower was the Darmstadt entrepreneur and politician Christian Zöppritz . As a wealthy member of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, he had leased a hunting ground in the Annweiler Forest . The relationships are likely to go back to the fact that the former Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt had larger possessions in Wasgau until the end of the 18th century. In honor of the patron, a stone memorial plaque was placed above the doorway of the tower, on which the following text is carved:

“Built in 1862 through voluntary contributions. At the suggestion of Chr. Zoeppritz "

Panorama

Since the Rehberg towers over its immediate surroundings, the tower's observation platform offers a panoramic view of the southern Palatinate Forest, the Rhine plain and the eastern edge of the Black Forest and Odenwald from a height of almost 590 m .
