occupation

Resistance is a tragic comedy by Jonathan Jakubowicz , which is due to hit German cinemas on September 24, 2020. The story of the international production is set in the Second World War , tells of the French resistance and is at the same time a film biography about the French pantomime Marcel Marceau .

action

The young Marcel is the son of the Jewish butcher Charles Mangel. He defies his father's wishes to take over the family business. He spends his free time painting and imitating Charlie Chaplin . France is occupied by the Germans. Marcel's older brother Alain was active in the French resistance during World War II. When his cousin Georges persuades him to look after a group of orphans rescued from Germany, his pantomime play is well received by the traumatized children. Marcel joins the Resistance .

When the political situation became tense, Marcel, his brother Alain and his cousin Georges and a small group of friends helped hundreds of Jewish orphans to flee. Under a pretext, they use the possibilities of the Save the Children Foundation to hide the children from the National Socialists. They first take the children south and hand them over to the care of nuns and scouts.

Biographical

The mime Marcel Marceau

The film is based on the memories of Marcel Marceau , who was born in Strasbourg in 1923 and, as "Bip", was one of the most famous and influential pantomimes in the world.

production

Film staff and promotion

Directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz , who also wrote the screenplay. The film is based on research and interviews with Marceau's cousin, the Jewish scout leader Georges Loinger . Jared Mobarak of The Film Stage notes that it is not a strict biography of Marcel Marceau . Jakubowicz instead focuses on what he and his friends went through when they hid Jews to resist Adolf Hitler's genocide.

The film received funding of 2 million euros from the special program for international co-productions of the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern .

occupation

Jesse Eisenberg plays the French pantomime Marcel Marceau. The director Jonathan Jakubowicz was already thinking of Eisenberg when he was writing the screenplay because, according to his statement, he looks similar to Marcel Marceau and Eisenberg's families come from the same region of Poland: “In terms of acting, I also found it interesting because I like to play comic and dramatic roles - which is good for the film fits, I play a comedian in a war drama, ”said Eisenberg. In the years 1938 to 1939, in which Resistance plays, Marceau was only 15 years old and thus around 20 years younger than the actor Jesse Eisenberg. Ed Harris plays US General George Smith Patton Jr. , who was in command of the 3rd US Army after landing in Normandy. Matthias Schweighöfer , who with his company Pantaleon Films is one of the producers of the film, took over the role of Klaus Barbie , the multiple convicted German Nazi war criminal who was known as the "butcher of Lyon" because of his cruelty and who died from 1945 to 1955 Protection first from British, then American government circles, who employed him as an agent. Félix Moati plays Marceau's older brother Alain, who was active in the French resistance, Géza Röhrig his cousin Georges Loinger, who was also a member of the Resistance.

Reviews

Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.

Jared Mobarak of The Film Stage writes that it was a good decision for the director not to emphasize Marcel Marceau's personal motives for not following in his father's footsteps, but to concentrate on his commitment and his colleagues, as these are private ones Moments could have seemed insignificant compared to the atrocities of the Holocaust . Resistance is therefore best and most exciting when it comes to the rebellion, as Marceau and the others are in constant danger of being caught and executed. The fact that the man at the center of the film should one day become a celebrity will ultimately become a trivial matter, even if Mobarak thinks there is a risk of letting Marceau take a back seat. At the same time, however, the film does not overshadow the nightmare scenario that unfolds around it. Jesse Eisenberg is convincing again in the role of a “genius”, according to Mobarak, and his pragmatism borders on Asperger's , if not even on absolute misanthropy.
