Rexroth or Rexrodt is a rare German family name .

distribution

The origin and main distribution of the name Rexroth are in the Odenwald and along the Main to the adjacent Spessart . The ancestors of the Odenwald Rexroth can be traced back to Wanfried ad Werra near Eschwege in the Werra-Meißner district . The name is known worldwide through the industrial company Rexroth in the Odenwald and in Lohr am Main , which today operates under the name Bosch Rexroth AG .

The much older and rarer name Rexrodt originally occurs primarily in northeast Hesse along the Werra ( Werra-Meißner district ). Later also in Thuringia and in the wider area. Probably the best-known name bearer of this line is the politician ( FDP ) Günter Rexrodt . From 1993 to 1998 he was Federal Minister of Economics .

In the USA , the spellings Rexroad and Reck (s) rode are particularly common.

Origin, early history and noble descent

From the 13th century, the noble knight family von Reckrodt first appeared in documents as von Re (c) kerade , von Reckerode , von Recherod and von Reck (s) rodt in different places in Hesse and Thuringia . For the sake of simplicity, the general notation of Recksrodt is used in the following text for the knightly noble family.

The name is mentioned in connection with various possessions, fiefs and monasteries. Some localities, districts and desolations carry the name up to modern times:

In the Chronicle of Reckenroth, 1253 speaks of a knight Dietrich von Recherode (or 1284 von Rekerade). In 1253 he belonged to the entourage of the Lords of Molsberg and in 1284, together with his wife Gisela, gave the monasteries Marienstatt ( Westerwaldkreis ), Thron and Gnadenthal Hof and estates in Eufingen near Dauborn ( Limburg-Weilburg district ).

in its various forms:

  • 1303 Reywikerode
  • 1414 Reywegerade
  • 1445 Regkerade
  • 1447–1454 Rengkenrade or Reyngkenrade
  • 1460 Redewerkerade
  • 1463 Reybeckerade
  • 1495-1534 Reckerode
  • 1575 Rückeroda.

In a document dated February 9, 1330 in the Christerode Chronicle (near Neukirchen (Knüll) , Schwalm-Eder-Kreis) it says:

The squire Konrad von Reckerode ( Cunrad von Reckerade ) and / or his wife Phye sells an estate located in the village of Christerode to Count Johann von Ziegenhain and receives the mill at Hausen (municipality of Knüllwald, Schwalm-Eder district) as a fief. (Certificate of the Marburg State Archives, County of Ziegenhain 1330)

The spatially relatively dense occurrence of people and places suggests a connection between place names and the von Recksrodt family of knights as very likely. Whether the name is based on any place names or vice versa is questionable.

From the 15th century onwards, the dynasty spread widely in Hesse and Thuringia along the Werra. During this time, the first connected fragments of the family tree can be identified. The family owned many castles and played an important role as mercenaries, clergy, officials and other dignitaries.

Transition to the middle-class Rexrodt / Rexroth family

There is no direct evidence of the transition of the noble, Hessian-Thuringian knight dynasty from Recksrodt to the middle-class Recksrodt / Rexrodt / Rexroth family.
