Appearance and leaf

Rhodotypos scandens is a deciduous shrub that usually reaches heights of about 0.5 to 2 (rarely up to 3) meters. The bark of the branches is bare and initially green and later brown. The buds have roof-tile-like overlapping bud scales.

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. With a length of 2 to 5 mm, the relatively short petiole is softly hairy. The simple leaf blade is egg-shaped with a length of 4 to 11 cm and a width of 3 to 6 cm with a rounded to almost heart-shaped blade base and a pointed upper end. The leaf margin is sharply double serrated. The underside of the leaf is initially silky hairy, later sparsely hairy. The upper side of the leaf is initially softly hairy and later balding. The early sloping, free Stipules are linear, membranous and soft hair.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends from April to May. The flowers stand individually at the tips of the branches. The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry , four-fold flower has a diameter of 3 to 5 cm with a double flower envelope (perianth). The flower cup (hypanthium) is cup-shaped and flat. Four elongated sepals stand between the sepals and are 1/5 to 1/4 as long as the latter. The four leaf-like sepals are in two pairs, which overlap like roof tiles and are ovoid-elliptical with a pointed upper end and sparsely hairy in the lower area. The petals are opposite the sepals and are 1/4 to 1/3 as long as the latter. The four free, white petals are nailed short and obovate. The many stamens are in several rows. The flower cup is crowned by a large, thick disc that is divided into four lobes that cover the fruit leaves during anthesis . There are usually four upper carpels , each containing only two hanging ovules , one of which dies. The mostly four terminal and thin stylus each end in a head-shaped stylus and protrude beyond the petals.

Fruit and seeds

There are one to four fruits together. The brownish-black when ripe are obliquely ellipsoidal with a length of about 8 mm. Since the smooth pericarp is dry, the fruits are a nuculanium, which is very similar to the stone fruits . The fruits ripen in China between June and September. Each fruit contains only one obovate seed .

Chromosome number

The basic chromosome number is x = 9, there is a diploidy, i.e. 2n = 18.

The genus Rhodotypos was created in 1841 by Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini in Flora Japonica , 1, p. 187, plate 99, figure 1 with the type species Rhodotypos kerrioides Siebold & Zucc. set up. The name Rhodotypos scandens was published in 1913 by Makino Tomitarō in Botanical Magazine , Volume 27, Issue 318, p. 126. Further synonyms for Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino are: Kerria tetrapetala Siebold and Rhodotypos tetrapetala (Siebold) Makino Rhodotypos scandens is the only species of the genus Rhodotypos from the tribe Kerriae in the subfamily Spiraeoideae within the family Rosaceae .
