Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 is a collabo - Mixtape of US rapper Young Thug , Birdman and Rich Homie Quan . It was released on September 29, 2014.

backgrounds

Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 is the first full album length collaboration between the three musicians after the commercially successful stand-alone single Lifestyle . It was originally conceived as the start of a new era for the Cash Money Records music label and mainly served as a promotion. The two performers and Young Thug Rich Homie Quan should become the new faces led by Birdman record company and a large-scale arena - tour initiate the common career of Cash Money crew. Shortly after the project appeared, the two newcomers fell out and left the label. The tour was therefore canceled, part 2 was never recorded. In the following years, Young Thug rose to become a successful superstar with numerous top ten and number one positions in the USA, and Rich Homie Quan's music sold moderately.

The mixtape was produced by Dun Deal , Isaac Flame , Goose , London on da Track , Mike Will Made It , Wheezy , Sonny Digital , Erv and Planet 9 . As guest performers come Peewee Roscoe , Peewee Longway , Yung Ralph , Bloody Jay , Nipsey Hussle , Jacquees , Lil Duke and MPA Wicced on. In the originally published version, the rapper Tizzle125 could also be heard on the track I Got , but his verse was removed when a mixing error was corrected .

Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 had no commercial release but was offered for free on websites specializing in mixtapes. Thus, there were no chart placements worldwide.

Music and lyrics

Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 can be assigned to Southern Hip-Hop and Trap and was created at a time when the first style of music in the USA was increasingly changing into the second. The three rappers take turns on the songs in their parts, although not every song has all three musicians. Birdman is the only one who does not have a solo piece on the mixtape. DJ Swamp Izzo acts as the announcer on the plant; Birdman also takes on this role on several titles. In this role, they announce the tour that gave the title (which ultimately never took place) and name the artists who were then under contract with Cash Money Records. In terms of content, the interpreters on Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 primarily celebrate a dissolute lifestyle that is characterized by luxury brands , sex and money . However, Rich Homie Quan in particular also sprinkles autobiographical elements, including his feelings about a custody dispute concerning his son .

Cover design

The cover artwork for Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 shows a red star on a black background. Birdman's head and neck can be seen transparently in the upper area . His head is bowed and the visor of his baseball cap covers his eyes . He wears a necklace with the initials RG, the second letter being mirrored . In the center of the star symbol is a face in black and white , the left half of which corresponds to that of Young Thug and the right half of that of Rich Homie Quan. The name Birdmans is written in small red above the motif, next to it in white the word “presents”. Directly underneath is "Rich Gang" in much larger, silver letters, underneath in red "Tha Tour Part 1", which is written in handwriting. Below the motif are the names of the three artists, also in silver, including several logos in white or red.

Criticism and Impact

Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 received consistently very positive reviews and is considered an important hip-hop classic of the 2010s , which significantly shaped the second half of it. If contemporary reviews were already very good, the work was honored, especially at the end of the decade, in a series of leaderboards and articles; It has been repeatedly referred to as one of the most successful, if not the best, collaboration album and used as a positive example for this genre. The chemistry between Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan has been unanimously highlighted since it was published. This would clearly set the project apart from other collaborations, which felt as if each rapper took their own individual part. On the work, the artists would sound like mirrored versions of each other and harmonize so well that hopes were raised that they would establish themselves as a popular hip-hop duo in the years after the release , but this did not happen. Rich Homie Quan lost his image as a future imitation after publication; Young Thug, who was still heavily influenced by Lil Wayne at the time , was able to develop his own personality and was himself often copied afterwards. In most reviews, however, Birdman's contributions are rarely mentioned or even referred to as accessories; most of the attention was given to the other two performers. Nevertheless, his verse on the song Flava was sometimes received as his best in a long time and he was repeatedly praised for having selected the right two artists for a collaboration from among the artists under contract with him. The mixtape was also a career springboard for the music producer London on da Track and contains the first major production of Wheezy.

Vice named the mixtape the second best album of its decade, Stereogum led it to 89th place, Rolling Stone 97th place. In Genius.com's community ranking of the best albums of the 2010s, it was 63rd place. Pitchfork named it the tenth best rap mixtape of the 3rd millennium in 2016 .
