Richard Alley

Richard B. Alley (born August 18, 1957 in Ohio ) is an American geologist and professor of earth sciences at Pennsylvania State University . He is the author of over 200 scientific publications on the relationship between the cryosphere and global climate change events. At the Institute for Scientific Information he is an often cited author.

Life

Richard Alley received his BSc in Geology and Mineralogy in 1980 and his Master of Sciences in 1983 from the Geological Faculty of Ohio State University . His Ph.D. he made in 1987 at the Geological Faculty of the University of Wisconsin – Madison . After a short period as a post-doctoral student , he was appointed to Pennsylvania State University , where he became the Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences in 2000 .

Act

Alley has published many scientific articles, including in the journals Nature and Science . He provided evidence that major and abrupt climate changes have occurred in the Earth's history and contributed to understanding the mechanisms that caused this. He was the chair of the National Research Council on Abrupt Climate Change , which in 2002 published the book entitled Abrupt Climate Change: Inevitable Surprises (German: " Abrupt Climate Change, Inevitable Surprises ").

Richard Alley has been a contributor to the IPCC since 1992. He contributed to the second and third assessment reports and was one of the main authors of the fourth chapter of the fourth assessment report, entitled "Observations: Changes in the snow, ice and frozen ground."

Richard B. Alley was or is on the following bodies:

  • Abrupt Climate Change Panel of the National Academy of Sciences
  • Polar Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences;
  • American Geophysical Union's Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology Panel
  • International Commission on Snow and Ice Working Group on the physics of ice cores
  • Earth System History Advisory Committee of the National Science Foundation ;
  • The West Antarctic Ice Sheet Project Executive Committee
  • WAISCORES West Antarctic Ice Sheet Coring Executive Committee
  • Ice Core Working Group
  • West Antarctic Ice Sheet and West Antarctic Ice Cores Projects
  • NOAA Abrupt Climate Change Panel
  • Polar Research Board

He is also one of the editors of the journal Quaternary Research and Geology .

Awards

Richard Alley was presented with the American Geophysical Union's Hydrologic Sciences Award in 1996 . In 2005, he was with the Seligman Crystal of the International Glaciological Society honored for his valuable contributions to understanding the stability of ice sheets and glaciers of Antarctica and Greenland, as well as erosion and sedimentation through this moving ice. In 2005 he was also the first to receive the Louis Agassiz Medal from the European Geosciences Union for his "outstanding and sustained contributions to glaciology and for his effective communication of important scientific problems to the public". In 2007 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In the same year he was honored with the Roger Revelle Medal of the American Geophysical Union, in 2009 he was awarded the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement . In 2010 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2011 he received the Heinz Award . In 2014 he was awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award and the Arthur L. Day Prize of the National Academy of Sciences , of which he has been a member since 2008, and was elected to the Royal Society . In 2016 he received the Climate Communication Prize . For 2017 he was awarded the Wollaston Medal .
