Richard Amsel

Richard Amsel (born December 4, 1947 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † November 17, 1985 in New York City , New York ) was an American illustrator and graphic designer .

Life

Blackbird graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art . When 20th Century Fox ran a poster competition for the film Hello, Dolly! Amsel won with his design, which became the official film poster .

He later settled in New York City, where he met Barry Manilow , among others , who introduced her to Bette Midler . Amsel created the record covers for Middlers debut album The Divine Miss M . Amsel also created the cover for Midler's second album, Bette Midler . Further work for musicians such as Eddy Arnold and Kenny Rogers followed .

From 1972 Amsel also worked for the television magazine TV Guide , for which he designed a total of 37 cover images over the following 13 years.

Amsel's movie posters for films such as The Last Performance , That Was Roy Bean , The Clou , Papillon , McCabe & Mrs. Miller , Murder on the Orient Express , Chinatown , Nashville , The Last Sniper , Julia , The Last Tycoon , The Champ or Muppet Movie .

One of his best-known works was the poster for the 1981 Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark . In the summer of 1985, Amsel moved to Los Angeles . His last film poster was made for the film Mad Max - Beyond the Thunder Dome .

In November 1985, Amsel died of complications from AIDS at the age of 37.
