Georg Erler (historian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Georg Erler (born January 1, 1850 in Krögis , † June 30, 1913 in Münster ) was a German historian .

Life

Erler was the son of a veterinarian and attended the Holy Cross Gymnasium in Dresden until 1869 . He then studied classical philology and history in Leipzig , mainly with Ludwig Lange and Georg Voigt . Participation in the Franco-German War interrupted his studies. After the state examination he was from 1873 to 1884 senior teacher at the Nicolai-Gymnasium . He received his doctorate in 1874 with the writing Quaestiones de Xenophonteo libro de republica Lacedaemoniorum . Among other things, because of an illness, he gave up the teaching profession.

With the work "The historical writings of Dietrich von Nieheim " he completed his habilitation in 1887 in middle and modern history. Until 1890 he was a private lecturer. The assumption of an extraordinary professorship for Middle and New History in Leipzig followed in 1890. He developed and published the register of the University of Leipzig for the years 1409 to 1809. The plan to write a history of the University of Leipzig failed because of numerous other obligations. Between 1892 and 1902 he taught as a full professor at the Albertus University in Königsberg . There, too, he dealt with the matriculations of the university. After that he was a professor in Münster until 1913 . 1907/1908 he was rector of the university. From 1908 to 1913 he was also chairman of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . Between 1907 and 1910 he was editor of the articles on the history of Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
