Richard Hunger

Walter Richard Hunger (born September 28, 1911 in Halle (Saale) ; † May 1, 1957 in Freiberg ) was a German geologist and university professor.

Life

Richard Hunger grew up in Halle and graduated from high school in 1932. He then studied natural sciences in Halle and Munich with the main subjects geology and botany . He finished his studies in 1938 and completed his doctorate at the Martin Luther University in Halle in the same year . In the same year he accepted an assistant position at the Museum for Central German Geological History and Geiseltalsammlung in Halle.

Between 1940 and 1945 he served in the military, initially as a pioneer and from 1941 as a military geologist. Richard Hunger returned to Halle on May 8, 1945, where he was in charge of the Geiseltal Museum until March 31, 1950 . He also worked for the museums in Wolmirstedt , Merseburg , Freyburg (Unstrut) , Halberstadt and Oschersleben , and he gave lectures on geological topics in the Kulturbund and at the adult education center .

On April 1, 1950, he became an assistant at the Institute for Fuel Geology at the Bergakademie Freiberg , and just under a year later he became senior scientific assistant. In 1952 he got a lectureship in fuel geology. In April 1953 he completed his habilitation. On June 15, 1953, Hunger was appointed full professor of fuel geology and institute director. From 1956 to 1957 he also headed the fuel geology department of the newly founded German Fuel Institute Freiberg.

Richard Hunger died of a heart attack at the age of 45. His grave is on the Donatsfriedhof in Freiberg . On September 27, 1991, Richard Hunger's life and work were honored with a memorial colloquium at the Institute of Geology at the Bergakademie Freiberg.
