Richard Johann Dietrich (born December 29, 1938 in Munich ; † November 2019 ) was a German architect and civil engineer . His bridges were particularly well known.
Life
After the death of his father in 1950, Dietrich attended the Aloisius College in Bad Godesberg. From 1960 to 1966 he studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich , among others with Gerd Albers . Until 1967 a USA scholarship followed, when studying civil engineering at the University of Southern California . At the time he was working in the team of Konrad Wachsmann (1901–1980) in Los Angeles.
From 1965 to 1974 Dietrich developed the Metastadt building system, the vision of urban planning for the future, realized with the companies OKAL and Thyssen .
In 1969 he founded an architecture office in Munich, which had also been active in Hof Bergwiesen near Traunstein since 1972 . In 1975 he was co-founder of the first institute for building biology in Rosenheim , the realization of a biological-ecological house followed in 1978 in Wasserburg . In 1978 Dietrich was commissioned to build a bridge over the Main-Danube Canal near Essing , which was completed in 1986 as a timber tensioning strap bridge. Numerous timber and steel bridges, solar houses and urban district planning followed.
In 1984 he built an eco-solar demonstration house for the city of Munich. In 1985 he became a lecturer at various universities in Germany, the USA, Canada, Japan and Korea.
He added a quote from Otto Wagner :
"... only what is constructively correct can be beautiful."
"... but not everything that is constructively correct is beautiful for that reason alone!"
