history

The city became the seat of the Hanford Site nuclear complex as part of the Manhattan Project . The Cold War gave the city a further boost. In 1987 the nuclear reactor was closed. To this day, the city lives with the shadows of the past, for example the sports team at Richland High School calls itself “The Bombers” and their badge is the mushroom cloud. Richland has housed the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory since 1965 and is home to one of LIGO's two measuring stations .

economy

The largest employer with 4,188 employees is the local research center of the Battelle Institute . The Hanford Site (3,630 employees), which is now subordinate to the Department of Energy and is now primarily concerned with environmental remediation, is of economic importance for the residents of Richland . More and more important branches of the city are agriculture and viticulture . Richland, along with the two neighboring cities of Kennewick and Pasco, is part of the Tri-Cities metropolitan region , which is home to around 200,000 people.
