Ried is a locality and cadastral municipality in the political municipality of Sankt Gilgen in the northeast of the Austrian state of Salzburg . The name Ried am Wolfgangsee also exists for the settlement area, which only takes up a small part of the total area . The area is separated from the main town of Sankt Gilgen by the Falkensteinwand, a rock massif on the northeast bank of Lake Wolfgang . It can only be reached by road on the long detour around the southeast side of Lake Wolfgang via Strobl and the Upper Austrian Sankt Wolfgang . The well-known Schafberg is located in Ried .

Cadastral municipality of Ried

The area of Ried as a cadastral community is just over 13 km². The border runs roughly from the middle of the striking Falkensteinwand on the northeastern bank of Lake Wolfgang in a northeast direction to around 900 m west of the Schafbergspitze, from there in an east-southeast direction along the northern edge of the Schafberg to the state border with Upper Austria just west of the Törlspitz (around 1,100 m from the Schafbergspitze away); there it turns south and follows the small Dietelbach to Sankt Wolfgang. The area of the cadastral community also includes the entire area of Lake Wolfgang at the level of Sankt Wolfgang to the opposite town of Reith and from there to around 1.9 km south of the center of Sankt Gilgen on the lakeshore opposite the Falkensteinwand.

Ried borders in the north, west and south on the Sankt Gilgener cadastral communities Oberburgau, Winkl and Gschwand and in the east on the cadastral community of the same name belonging to the political community Sankt Wolfgang. In the extreme southeast, where the Ried border follows the narrowest point of Lake Wolfgang, it touches the Strobl cadastral community of Gschwendt.

The largest part of Ried is unpopulated mountain or lake area, with the latter making up around 37% of the total area. Only a narrow strip along the lake from the end of the Falkenstein elevation to Sankt Wolfgang is settlement area. As a district of Sankt Gilgen, this also bears the name Ried am Wolfgangsee .

Ried village

The area of Ried as a village is almost 1 km² larger than that of the cadastral community and is around 14 km²; part of the western slope of the Schafberg is part of the cadastral municipality of Winkl, but at the same time belongs to the village of Ried.

Almost the entire route of the Schafbergbahn , a cogwheel railway up to the Schafberg, opened in 1893, is in the Ried area . Only its valley station and the first 400 m are in Sankt Wolfgang on Upper Austrian soil. The Schafbergspitze is located on the northern border between Ried and Oberburgau.

At the western end of the settlement area, the castle-like main building of the Ferienhort am Wolfgangsee , which is under monumental protection, is striking and visible from afar. It houses a vocational secondary school and serves as a recreation area for schoolchildren during the summer months. A little to the west of it is the Villa Frauenstein, which is also listed.

In Ried there is a landing stage for the Wolfgangsee shipping, which is operated annually from April to October.
