history

The oldest surviving mention of the place comes from the year 1339. The spelling of the place name developed from Rossebach (1339) and Rospach (1598) to today's Roßbach .

Rossbach belonged to the Bieber office , a fiefdom of Kurmainz , initially to the Counts of Rieneck . Half of the office - including Roßbach - passed to the Lords of Hanau through inheritance in 1333 . So a condominate was created . When the County of Hanau was divided in 1458, the Hanau half of the condominium came to the County of Hanau-Münzenberg . In 1559 the Counts of Rieneck died out. Their rights reverted to Kurmainz. Roßbach was now in a condominium shared between Kurmainz and the County of Hanau-Munzenberg, with the Hanau half still being a fiefdom of Kurmainz.

The village belonged to the parish of Bieber and became Lutheran during the Reformation . In 1684 the condominium between Mainz and Hanau was dissolved by a contract: The Bieber office - and with it Roßbach - was completely transferred to Hanau together with the Lohrhaupten office . Mainz received the joint office of Partenstein in full. The office of Bieber remained a fiefdom of Mainz.

1736 died with Count Johann Reinhard III. the last Count of Hanau and the county of Hanau-Munzenberg fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel . In 1821 there was a fundamental administrative reform in the former Landgraviate, now known as the “ Electorate of Hesse ”. The Bieber office was dissolved, and its communities were added to the newly formed Gelnhausen district.

The narrow-gauge Spessart Railway was put into operation in 1885 to promote ore mining in the Biebertal . It led from Gelnhausen train station via Wirtheim to Lochborn. In 1951 it ceased operations. Part of the railway line has been preserved as a hiking and cycling path.

On October 1, 1971, Roßbach became part of the municipality of Bieber as part of the regional reform in Hesse , which in turn merged with Biebergemünd on July 1, 1974. On the same day, the district of Gelnhausen became part of the Main-Kinzig district .

The area of the former community Roßbach was 8.14 km².

Until 2012, Roßbach was a state-approved resort .
